The Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) is proud to announce the 2010 Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships competition. The CSEAS administers the FLAS program, which provides funds for academic year and summer fellowships to assist graduate students in acquiring competencies in Southeast Asian languages. Applicants must meet eligibility criteria established by the Department of Education in order to receive fellowships.
The deadline for Summer 2010 and Academic Year 2010-2011 is 1 February 2010. Please see the applications below for further information:
UPDATE: There is a one-semester Southeast Asia FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) fellowship still available for Spring 2010 only. The deadline for this Spring 2010 is Thursday, 28 January 2010.

This program is a highly intensive eight-week program offered to students with at least intermediate level study of Filipino (Tagalog) language (or the equivalent). An applicant must be a graduate student, or a junior or senior in an institution of higher education at the time of the 2010 AFAP Program, and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

The Vietnamese Advanced Summer Institute (VASI) is an intensive eight-week course of study in advanced Vietnamese conducted at Vietnamese Language Studies Saigon in Ho Chi Minh City. VASI is equivalent to a full year’s academic work.

Consortium Advanced Study of Thai Abroad

An intensive eight-week course for students with at least intermediate-level study of Thai language (or the equivalent) is conducted with assistance from the U.S. Department of Education, Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program. The program is offered contingent on sufficient enrollment and receipt of funding.

On 26 to 28 November 2009, the Philippines plays host, through the Ateneo de Manila University, to the 14th English in South East Asia (ESEA) Conference. This conference carries the theme “English Changing: Implications for policy, teaching, and research.”
The ESEA conference series is the result of collaboration between the National Institute of Education (Singapore), the University of Malaya (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), the University of Brunei Darussalam, Curtin University (Perth, Australia), Ateneo de Manila University (Quezon City, the Philippines), Hong Kong Institute of Education, Sanata Dharma University (Yogyakarta, Indonesia), King Mongkut’s University of Technology (Thonburi, Thailand), and the University of Waikato (New Zealand).
