A specialist in Cultural Anthropology, I also teach introductory courses in prehistory and a range of courses in Southeast Asian studies and gender studies. My primary research focus has been gender relations among Javanese rural dwellers, particularly in contexts of music performed for rites of passage. When not teaching, I continue work on a book featuring contemporary notions and practices of masculinity and femininity in Java. I also enjoy playing music and singing with the University of Hawaii Gamelan Ensemble.
